[RESOLVED] SMTP - PHP - LINUX - Different Servers

Hello all.

Is there anyway to get my Linux PHP box to send emails from my Linux QMail/BIND box?

The php.ini setting for sendmail_path doesnt like an IP ...

I have searched Google and the boards, but arrived here ...

Help ... anyone ... please?

Note: Both machines are on a private IP network and DNS for all machines is setup properly.

What you need to do is run a MTA on your web server box (with PHP), and set its "smart host" or similar parameter to point at the other box, which must be configured to act as a "mail relay" for the web box.

Then the MTA will queue and send messages to the other which will then deliver them. This is the Right way of doing things.

Don't have PHP implement SMTP itself- it simply isn't necessary. With a local MTA you can just use mail()

Well -- here is how I did it ... for future readers.

I set the sendmail_path in php.ini to /usr/sbin/sendmail -t -i on the web server

I set the "Smart" relay host in /etc/mail/sendmail.cf to: DS<myip-or-fqdn> on the web server

I set my /etc/tcp.smtp to 127.allow,RELAYCLIENT="<myip-or-fqdn>" on the mail server

Restarted sendmail and qmail on the respective servers.

Everything works.
