remove text after a certain character

How would I go about deleted everything after a certain character?

For example, if I have the phrase "Luck is good", I want to omit everything from the first space to the end, so that the output is just "Luck".

I looked at substr, but it seems that you have to provide the number of the character. I don't know where the space will actually be... could be after 4 characters, could be after 10.

Well, easy way would probably be to [man]explode/man the string into an array on this special character, and just use the first item of the array.

Otherwise, you could delve into regular expressions, though they're probably overkill in this situation.

That's where [man]strpos/man comes in.

$phrase = "Luck is good";
if (($pos = strpos($phrase, ' ')) !== false) {
	$str = substr($phrase, 0, $pos);
} else {
	$str = $phrase; // no spaces in $phrase
}
