Use this Link and take your pick it is here and you will have the Newest Version of Apache you don't need anything special for window I have been using Apache since 2001 with Win 98 Win ME and XP it works just fine, just download and install it.

Or better than that just get XAMPP, you just download it and then install it and it is a done deal. You will then have Apache MySQL PHP 4 and PHP 5 and be able to switch between the two and Perl and phpMyAdmin plus even more.

A no headache solution to easy Apache install along with other software, unless you like reading lots of reference material and then still screwing up the install and asking others how to fix what all you have screwed up.

🙂 Thankyou very much. This worked. I found another problem when I was installing it - the previouse uninstalll of the mySQL service didn't uninstall the service so I went to the windows XP newsgroup and found an article on deleting a service.

FYI open a cmd window and run sc delete <servicename>

that worked as well. Thanks again.

As a preamble, please let me explain that I am NEW to this and am learning on my own through reading forum posts and info on the internet. I am on a very remote island and there is NO tech help within several hundred kilometers of me.......

You say that it is easy to install apace and now I am reading there is XAMPP (am I right in saying this is a server to test php scripts?) and I am still afraid to d/l and install one or the other until I am a lot clearer about how to do it and how to use it..........

I have posted in another thread (with no response) about whether it is necessary to even have apache/XAMPP at all?

I am trying to design my website which can accommodate email forms, an online shopping cart (using PayPal) and scripts for printing.

IF I can just achieve that for now, I would be a pretty happy person.

XAMPP pretty much stands for Apache,MySQl, PHP, and Perl While such installation packages as WAMP are just Apache, MySQL and PHP. These are easy to install webservers that set up your local PC for developing and testing locally your own ideas and scripts without having to prucahse webspace and run a live internet server.

I use XAMPP and have used WAMP (since I have Windows OS) to create and test PHP MySQL and other webrelated ideas on my local machine before I place them on a working server on the internet without disrupting this service in the event I make a mistake (quite common) when writing or editing a script. XAMPP is just a developmental environment that acts exactly as it would on the internet except when you goof up it doesn't take your whole site down while you try to figure out what it is that you did wrong with your script.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, I downloaded it last night and I think I know now what it can do - will have to try it out.......... am going away over the weekend, but will have a go when i gwt back.

You wiil like th ability to switch between PHP 5 and PHP 4 with XAMPP. Although at one point in time I did install Apache then MySQL and then PHP I had great difficulty with it and this was even with reference material. Then I found Triad and tried it but later a new version of Apache came out and I wanted it as well as the newer version of PHP. Then I found XAMPP and have used it ever since. I used to also use WAMP runnning PHP 5 and XAMPP with PHP 4 but now just use XAMPP. The ease up install of this software is one of the greatest reasons for using it. Hope you enjoy using XAMPP and can now write and test code instead of asking about how to set up your working environment.

Note that when you do wish to alter you php.ini file that XAMPP stores it in the c:\Program Files\xampp\apache\bin\ folder so if you want to use mail or GD then that is where you will find the correct php.ini to edit.

XAMPP is what I'd go for.

Up until recently I was working on a PHP script and having to upload it everytime i wanted to test it, only to find some bug etc........and it was eating (albeit very slowly) into my bandwidth.

With XAMPP I can finally learn and develop a script using mySQL without having to double my web-host fees to get mySQL added to my host package, and also release the finished article well and truly polished.

I reckon my coding and testing time had halved since installing XAMPP.......go for it. Dead easy to install........I just downloaded the windows installer and told it where to install....made a couple of security changes following the instructions and bingo
