Hi, has anyone ever heard of a free php script that does the same as myspace or geocities. I want to create my own community based on these sites and use it as a starting point.

How hard do you think it is to create one of these from scratch? I would have no idea how i would go about doing it.

I'm afraid it's about the best answer you're going to get. You yourself admitted that you "would have no idea how i would go about doing it". They're not simple applications, they may seem like it's all simple CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Display), which they are, but their sheer breadth make them grow into damn complex beasts. I think I can safely say that eeryone on this board would find writing a MySpace condender a considerable challenge and we have some pretty awesome developers here.

So, based on this... extremely hard... 😉

I don't think it would be a considerable challenge to write something along the lines of MySpace, it would just take quite a while to do it.

Well, think of it this way:

I like to design apps, I know nothing about C, C++, or any other desktop language. I notice Windows looks neat, I want to write an OS, but I know nothing about writing it. Would it be easy or hard? Of course it's going to be hard. Is it possible to do? Yes, but for someone who doesn't know a lot about the language or how to write it, but it's going to take a long time and it's not going to be the caliber you'd like at first.

Hmm.... maybe that's why Windows is so long between updates/upgrades.... no-one knows what they're doing 😉

I don't think it'd be a challenge for anyone to create a mySpace or Geocities contender, but it would just take a while to create one that is of the same caliber or better. It's possible, but it would take a while.

IMHO, something like myspace can definitely be created, even quickly, given enough help and talent. The real issue in my eyes is coming up with a good reason for all the 10 bajillion existing myspace users to switch--after all, if you're going to spend oodles of time and possibly money on such a project, you'd hope you actually have a user base of more than yourself and a few friends.

In other words.... it can be done, but does it need to be? (what makes yours special/different/better than the myspaces/friendsters/livejournals/deadjournals/etc....)

Can't think of a PHP script that does what myspace does. You could probably create a cheesy version of myspace without too much work assuming you had average level of PHP experience.

After looking at myspace a bit more, really its not what im after anyway.....geocities is more what i want to create. By the way, found a few myspace copies on hotscripts, there exactly the same if anyone is interested.

by the way, if i were to create a geocities look alike, how could i dynamically create subdomains for each new registrant?

Not my site, but I found this site that's simliar to myspace that's made with php.

Well, you could start by searching the PHPBuilder forums and looking at the answer that I gave you the last time you asked this question.

It's a really good answer. It's the correct way to solve the problem. If the answer doesn't make sense then this project is over your head and you need to hire someone to build this for you. If you don't hire someone, you are going to make mistakes that will compromise the security of your site.

So, the issue is probably either envy, or someone who thinks that they can compete. Look at myspace, see who owns it, how much they've spent. Can you add features, increase storage size per user, give a more lenient AUP, etc., etc., etc.

If not, find another niche, or be relegated to a small piece of the pie.
