Highly skilled

I'm looking for a new job at the moment, and I came across one that had this sentence in it:

Successful candidates will be highly skilled in PHP, MySQL, CSS, HTML and JavaScript.

However, they don't define what "highly skilled" means? Is it someone who can use PHP to connect to a database, retrieve data and make it look pretty? Cos that would cover all of the above topics. Or is it someone who can do fancy stuff with GD? Anyone got any ideas?

It's subjective. Go for the interview and find out, at the very least it will be good experience for later interviews. At a guess I'd say that they don't really know what they're looking for themselves.

Also remember that when they put "highly skilled" in a job posting, just virtually remove the phrase entirely with your mind--after all, isn't every employer after the highly skilled workers? You never see "Looking for mediocre coder" or "ISO programmer with no abilities, to muck things up whilst we look on unwittingly" 😃

My bet is that your definition of "highly skilled" is much much more exclusive than theirs, so go for it! 🙂

They have this false hope that adding 'highly' will weed out the worst ones so they have less people to interview. From my experience it does not work.

I remember the days (dotcom - 1997) when they were using 'Ninja' to refer to somebody highly skilled at something.

Seeking designer with ninja-like skills.

Saying "successful candidates will be highly skilled" is probably short for "don't expect anyone else here to be of any help because we haven't got a clue ourselves; you'll be landed with all the technical stuff while we're all out meeting with clients and drumming up more work for you to do and oh by the way could you set up our server and fix my email?" They have to pay by the word after all (unless it's a fancy ad, and then they have to pay by column space).
