altering phone number strings

I am dealing with phone numbers and get them posted to a webpage with the prefix 44 instead of 0 and need to change it so that I can reference them to numbers stored in a database already.
Is there a way to remove the 44 from the phone number string and replace it with a 0 without the possibility of removing any other 44's in the string?
eg If i get the number 44766844979 I obviously only want to remove the first 44 and not the sequence in the middle.

yes this is very simple.

ereg_replace("pattern","replace","string");

$tel = "441482224547";

ereg_replace("44","0",$tel);

ops didnt see that last bit in post, 1 sec, will get other idea.

this might be a bit crude, but will work. still using the same above just follow this idea.

$tel = "#". "441482224547";

or

$tel = "441482224547";
$tel = "#". $tel;

then instead of searching for 44 now search for the pattern #44 😃
