PHP optimized hardware/OSs

I'm looking into building a LAMP server and I was wondering if anyone has any good sugestions on hardware/OSs optimized for intense php procecssing.

A bunch of our sites will be mambo/joomla cms based and they are very slow when hosted on godaddy. Joomla requires a ton of php processing to work and we're hoping to optimize a server to process and prase it quickly.

Is it as simple as the fastest processer we can get our hands on with tons of memory or are there other factors involved.

Any guideance would be greatly appreciated!

There are always other factors.....

How experienced in Linux are you? Some say teh best OS is either Gentoo or Fedora Core 4 or 5. But any Linux OS will do you (unless you want windows.... 🙁 )

Honestly your best bet if you don't know anything about hardware and such is to purchase a system from some place like Rackspace.com and have them maintain it. That way you can worry strictly about the OS and software, but they worry about the hardware.

I think you'll find that there are more apache servers running on freeBSD (not Linux) than any other OS.
