been searching the forums for users online scripts, i got the general idea of using session_id and a sql table to store each active user (guest and member)

But is there any easier way? The thought of adding the session id onto the end of every link on the page is a bit scary.

You don't need to add the session id onto the end of every link. The session id is stored as a cookie and is passed in automatically. Oh, and you are on the right track with your approach towards counting users who are online - that's the easiest way to do it.

PHP Session IDs may get added to URLS if cookies are disabled on the client's browser but that's something you don't have control over unless you check that cookies can be set and stop them from using your site if they can't be set (which is a bad idea)
