Complete newbie to php

Hey everyone, I am new to PHP and I am still trying to set up my system i am learning from a book, Sams Teach yourself PHP. The problem I am having is viewing my code online. I have downloaded the PHP program from php.net. I write the code in notepad but when I try to open the code in IE it prompts me to a scree saying I need a program to view the information. Any help would be of great use.

You must run php on a web server to view it, it is a server side language, so you IIS or something like that then place your PHP code in the root directory of your webserver to view it.
Try XAMPP for Windows or Linux or I beleve that MAC already has Apache on it, but I use windows so am not sure.

Depending on your version of windows, its on the cd. Your best bet IMO however would be apache.

why not try useing PHPTriad? you can just type it in any search engine you use and then just download the application/package

* BEST ADVICE * take this from one Newbie to another - Download and install XAMPP!!!

This is the best advice that you have been given. XAMPP is the idea environment to get up and running with PHP for beginners - it has been my saviour - though I have done multiple manual installs of Apache, mySQL, and PHP on windows - it takes 10 mins instead of 1 hour.

Advice *** use a pre-build server such as apache2triad or XAMPP when you start using php. As you develop things will make more sense. Do not deal with IIS (Microsoft) though some like it as a webserver. PHP/MYSQL/APACHE is great

NOTE ON DREAMWEAVER
Its well to do but it often time generates poor code because it focuses on developing that aspect of your PHP app. While you should keep in mind the wider scope of your app.
