Question about "Switch"

when you use switch, say to figure out a horoscope sign from user input, does each "case" statement automatically increment the month?

Here is a code snippet:

case 1:
if ($day < =19) {

$sign = "capricorn";
} else {
$sign = "aquarius";

case 2:

etc. etc.

How does it know to do that?

Why increment? No...

First of all month is set somewere ex. $month = 5;

Then that switch works like that:

In case that month is 1 
              check if $day grater or equal 19 
              then sign is "capricorn"
              else sign is "aquarius"
       if month was 1 get out of this switch (break; )
In case that month is 2
              .........
       if month was 2 get out of this switch (break; )
......
In case that month is 12
              .........
       if month was 12 get out of this switch (break; )

No increment.

Switch is just a nicer concept than a bunch of if elseif's...

In your example, it takes the value of month and compares it against each of the "case" values until it finds one which matches.

In your case, it knows that if the month is 1, then the starsign is either Capricorn or Aquarius, depending om whether the day is greater or less than 19.

Yes I think so. I'm just learning this, and I was unsure. The book code was not very clear. Thanks for the help.
