[RESOLVED] I can COUNT! ... but I need help still ...

I have a items listed in a database with numbers ... 1, 2, 3

some are like 4a and 4b ...

but my issue of course, is that I want them to appear: 8, 9, 10, 11

and not 1, 10, 11, 12 ... 2, 20, 21, 22 ...

These numbers are in a varchar field in the database to allow for the '4a' and '4b' issues ... how can I re-order the rows in my query to come back so that the number 4 comes before 10 ?

You could put the query results into an an array, then use natcasesort().

Ahh - ok that looks perfect!
But ... I'm not sure how to put query results into an array - would that be a multidimensional array? Last time I tried to work with those, I failed miserably ... is there a quick way you could demonstrate the concept?

Thanks Houdini, but - I understand that part of it ... I think ...
That's the query array which will come back in an invalid order ... where number 11 comes before number 2.

If there was a way to use the natural order in the QUERY then this wouldn't be an issue, but my thinking for this solution goes like this:

MYSQL query array > new array > echo natorder(new array)

And the middle step is what I don't understand. I need to load the query array into a new array that I can reorder how I see fit, and frankly ... I'm just kinda lost as to how to do that. Does my direction make sense?

I'll leave my last post up there - but you may have been right Houdini - I'm looking into that [MYSQL_ASSOC] optional tag there ... will post back if I can't get it right.

i think ur script is ok. i can't see what is in last word of your select statment. i think it should be ORDER BY fieldname ASC'

fieldname should be the field which contain your value;
