[RESOLVED] HTML in the body of a form field

Hi All --

I am pulling my hair out!
I'm working on a website where the user inputs data into a form field.
I have the field set to text datatype in mysql. The data is successfully being
dumped into the database -- but any line breaks or HTML is not being recognized by browser.

Can anyone help me (before I go bald LOL)?

For line breaks use nl2br() and for showing your html code us htmlspecialchars().

Thanks -- but I don't necessarily want them to show in the browser...I just want mysql to 'see' them so that they will format the text properly.

Will this fix this issue?

I'd like for, say the tag to be stored in the database so that when I display the data, the line break is recognized.

Hi hi hi hi hi, I could play with u like this all day .... 😃

First of all u can format the text when u enter it into db or u can format it after u extracted from db...

So if u want to replace line breaks with u can use nl2br(), if u what to see the tag in browser u can use htmlspecialchars(), when u use thoes functions is your choise ...

Is the form field in question a textarea?

Also, what exactly is the problem? Line breaks aren't being preserved? As in, after the data is inputted into HTML, and then redisplayed later in the browser, the data is all on one line? If so, you simply need to use [man]nl2br[/man] either before or after retrieving the data from the MySQL database. Why? When browsers parse HTML, they don't split lines by looking for line feeds/carriage returns, but for the HTML element .

Yes, yes yes...that's EXACTLY what's happening.
I'll try this and let you guys know what happens...
