Calculate Months and Days from $date to today

Howdy,

I am currently looking for a piece of code wich can calculate the amount of years / months and days from today

Example would be 11 Februari 2006 (format : 2006-02-11) till now would be 0 years, 3 months and 12 days.

And that the 3 numbers would be available in 3 variables

$year, $month, $days

Anyone a clue how to solve this ?

I would use mktime which converts $year, $month, and $day into Unix time. (A 10 digit number - the number of seconds that have elapsed since Midnight, Dec 31, 1969.) Assume that you have $year, $month, $day and you also have $year2, $month2, $day2 and you want to find out how much time there is between them. The number of seconds between them is calculated like this:

$time_diff_in_seconds = mktime(0,0,0,$month,$day,year) - mktime(0,0,0,$month2,$day2,year2);

There are 86400 seconds in a day. There are 7 86400 seconds in a week. There are 31 86400 seconds in a month. There are 365 * 86400 seconds in a year. The time difference between the two dates is $time_diff_in_seconds. You can use that information to figure out how many days, months, and years there are between the two dates.

lol thats asuming every month has 31 days in it...

you would have to mess around working what month your in calculating what month had how many days in each to compensate not to mention leap year..

Don't use a computer. Just think about it for a minute.

23 days in June and 26 days in July. That's 49 days. So how many months, weeks and days is that? I'd call it one month, two weeks and four days because I call a month 31 days.

Are you saying that I should call a month 30 days because the counter started in June? What if we were talking about the 49 days between July 8 and August 26, 2006? Both of those months have 31 days in them. So 49 days is sometimes one month, two weeks and FOUR days while at other times, 49 days is one month two weeks and FIVE days?

The OP asked a vague question. He wanted to know years, months, and days... but you can't define a month. I'll prove it: If I said to you, I'll give you a call in two months, three weeks, and four days from now, you wouldn't be able to know for sure which day I was going to call.

So clearly he's looking for a rough estimate. And my answer gives him that.

It needs some validation and error-checking code, and with just a little more code it could work with future dates as well.

I am clearly stating that isnt the best way to do it, if i had all day long at work to do nothing and provide the code for this i would do so, but i cant, so i didnt, i just mearly suggested that you might of mist some factors which you might not of thought about at first sight, when i looked and obviously the other guy did the same also.

PS to make your idea better i wouldnt use 31 days, i would use 30 as that is the mean of 365 / 12 which actually gives a more acurate reading 😛 HAHA
