Automatic line breaks in MySql?

Well, i am lost here. I am trying to figure out how to insert data in MySql and make it come back out in the exact same format as what i enter, but with <br> for each line break if it is not inside an html tag....Example :

<a href="blah">Blah</a>

<style>
some{style:sheet};
another{style:sheet};
</style>

Then some text here.....blah blah

Blah Blah
some more text

---

and that would come out looking like this....

<a href="blah">Blah</a>
<br><br>
<style>
some{style:sheet};
another{style:sheet};
</style>
<br><br>
Then some text here.....blah blah
<br><br>
Blah Blah
<br>
some more text

i have tried that, but it did not work the way i was looking to make it work. as you can see in this forum....

i can put as many blank lines in between others and it still shows exactly as i type it...even with html.
When i view source on what i have entered, it shows <br /> even in html tags...example:

<style><br />
body{blah:blah}<br />
</style>

How would i stop that?

You could use htmlentities() to insert the data into the database and then use html_entity_decode() to view them after you retrieve them from the database.

lol...i just tried that...but, i am trying to design a script somewhat like myspace.com's bulletin. You can enter html and text, and the format will still show exactly as you enter it, and the html will not show and it will actually work on the page. I can enter the below in the bulletin on myspace.......

<style>
a.navbar{color:780000}
a.navbar:hover{color:ff0000}
</style>
Blah blah blah blah blah blah blah

blah blah blah blah

and it will show with NO line breaks above the beginning of the text on the page. If i put the exact code above in my script, it will put 4 line breaks before the actual text is shown on the page. Can that be stopped?

this is how i enter the text in my script.......

How do i get rid of the <br /> in the html tags but leave the ones that are outside of it?
