checking if other user is logged in

I'm wondering if anyone knows a better way to check if another user is currently logged into a site other than having that user update a timestamp in mysql with every new page visit and then checking to see if that timestamp falls into a certain window, say 2 minutes?

From my understanding are you saying you want say User A check to see if User B is logged in? Id say its the best way.
