Just Wondering: MAC or PC?

Hi, all.

I am contemplating getting a new box and wanted some guidance.

So...

I was wondering who here uses a MAC and who uses a PC?

And, do you have strong convictions about WHY you use what you do?

I have both and I use the PC more. The Macs biggest plus is the video editing which puts everything I have tried on the PC to shame.

And I don't have strong convictions for either. (same goes for Windows and Linux)

I use a Mac. In the future when I buy a new Mac, it now runs XP (and certainly Vista). And Linux. I will never, in the forseeable future, buy anything but a Mac.

Have you seen the vid with the person runnin OSX, XP and Ubuntu at the same time...using Parallels to quickly navigation to and fro. It's impressive.

Which one is that, Piersk? THe new 13" screen? Are you going to get 512MB or a GIG? 80GIG HD or 100GIG?

13" with 80Gb hard disk and gig RAM. Cheaper since I'm on a Uni network and can therefore use Apple's educational store

I don't know if it's a common thing on XP but in OSX most heavy duty users I know use DesktopManager or VirtualDesktop (I think this is what it's called). Both of which give you multiple desktops at the same time for doing stuff. For instance, I have a desktop just for email and AIM, another for Safari, one for graphics (usually Illustrator) and one more for programming (TextDrive). Switching is totally fast and doesn't have the computer at all. I couldn't live without this utitliy on my laptop...

Hey Vaaaska,

that is soo coool. I used to have a 2-screen setup at work, but moveed job, and only get a 15"" desktop, which is a bit annoying (After double 19" before). I suppose I'll have to go Mac, and multitop.

Maybe macs w/ intel processors are a good choice? I was had a triple-boot G3: OS 9, OSX and linux. I suppose w/ an intel mac you could set up a quad-boot machine (or probably just triple boot: OSX, Wincrud, Linux and forget about pre-OS-X). Of course, rebooting is a crime so there is probably no point to doing this anyway?

I mostly use a Mac (15" Powerbook) now, after many years of PCs. But I still use PCs for Linux and occasionally Windows.

I'm sorry, but I'm all for PCs. I don't know, I use Macs in school, which school computers are always crap, but I prefer Dells and Microsoft software--I use XP Pro SP2 on a 10gb hard drive. Outdated. But I love it anyway.

I am a budget-conscious consumer, Jazz Snob, so I bought an Apple Refurb.

The graphics card or the LCD needs to be replaced as the fonts are rendered a little
on the fuzzy side.

I called APPLE and was VERY impressed with their customer service.

Am also impressed with the computer's speed...

It is disappointing, but they will ship me out a new one.

I'll let y'all decide for yourselves if this if this is for real...but the juice on this debate is about to start happening as there is an upcoming Apple conference coming and people believe we might know then.

I got a refurbed Mac too - no problems so far.

And I'm not sorry, but I like Mac OS X way better than Windows.

I recieved the replacement iMac and guess what? The keyboard didn't work completely: Not all the letters could be CAPITALIZED when the shift key was held down.

But, I didn't let that stop me. I plugged into my network and downloaded Firefox right away. Then I came here. I was disappointed again: The picture clarity was definitely not as sharp as my older iMAC at the office.

I then went into the APPLE reseller in town and we fired up PHPBuilder.com on his MacBookPro side-by-side with a 17" iMAC.

The 15" MacBookPro's picture clarity was better than the 17" iMAC.

We couldn't figure out why some fonts weren't even rendering on the iMAC until we read the style sheet. The homepage on PHPBuilder uses a Windows font: "Tahoma", which explained some sloppiness, but not the overall lack of pristine definition and contrast.

Granted, the MAC is STILL better than all the PCs in the studio, but the new intel-MAC's picture quality is NOT as good as their older G-5 iMacs (pre-Intel).

Don't believe me? Do a side-by-side.

However, the graphic clarity in things like the dock, and the software native to the machine is beautiful.

I ended up calling apple to explain my frustration.

I do have to say, Hands-Down, APPLE HAS THE BEST CUSTOMER SERVICE I HAVE EVER RECIEVED FROM JUST ABOUT ANYWHERE OR IN ANY INDUSTRY.

Their service makes me want to continue to support them and their products.

They suggested that if I bought one with the 256MB video card upgrade and installed the missing fonts....
