Accessing files with PHP protected by .htaccess/.htpasswd

How do you access files with PHP (I want to force download) but the directory is protected with htaccess/htpasswd

I'm going to take a wild guess here and think that www.mydomain.com is the host that this code will be running on? If that is the case, why are you downloading it from the same web server that's hosting the script in the first place? Why not just read the file? (In short, use the file path, not a URL.)

Then you could put the files "below" the public_html folder - no need for htaccess 🙂

Yes that would be better. Unfortunatly I am trying to integrate into an existing system. The songs directory is set and without reworking a large part of the system, I can't change it. The files ARE hosted on the same server as the script.

You don't have to. The point is that you're using an HTTP url to access the files, which means you're accessing them through the web server (again, I might add, since you're already using the web server to get this far) which is why you're being hassled about HTTP authorisation. Your web server already has access to its own filesystem. Use it.
