Limiting number of items per row (in a table)

Hi,

I need a bit of help.

I've been trying to work on a gallery script and I'm trying to have it so that only 5 pictures are displayed on one row(<td>) and then it automatically starts a new row(<tr>).

I found a couple of things that worked half well but I was unable to make any of them work the way I wanted them to.

Obviously the user will be adding pictures to the gallery so I would like it to be able to accomadate that.

Ex. If the user has 9 pictures, have 5 on the top row and 4 on the bottom and when they add a new picture, it would be 5 on top 5 on the bottom and if a new picture is added, it starts a new row.

I'm not sure where to start with this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

is this from a database?

you will want to use LIMIT to select how many you want

ie.

SELECT * FROM table LIMIT 0, 10

That takes the first 10 records

When echoing out out and its looking round the dataset you could have a counter thats counting as you echo them out, each time it reaches 5 it takes a new line and resets itself to 0 🙂

just an idea, not quite sure how you are doing the rest of the database since you didnt give many details.

if you want to put in something at every n iteration, then check if the number you're at divided by n gives any remainder. If not, you're at a multiple of n

$a % $b : Remainder of $a divided by $b

Using modulo operator i.e. % (manual referrence) in following manner:

$i=0;
$max=X;//the total amount of images
while(your loop condition){
     $i++;//increment it on the start so the numbers would start at 1
     if($i%5==0){
          echo "<tr>";
     }
     echo "<td><img src'\"\"></td>";//<-- you get the picture
     if($i%5==0 or $i==$max){
          echo "</tr>";
     }
}

This would print out the table like you want it but if you do it like this and you have a total of images that has remainder different to 0 when dividing it with 5 you have to take care of four cases:
-> When remainder is 1, when it is 2, 3 and 4 (number of total images is 6 or 11, 7 or 12 and so on...)
You might want to do something like when the modulo to 5 of max is 1 add two empty cells to the last row before and after the one cell you have that is populated in last row, add three empty cells after first one and before last one when modulo is 2 and so on...

I wrote another little function to do this, but sorry, I can't find it right now. Anyway, what it did was what the last poster suggested, the kicker was to feed it the variables you need dynamically. Here's a pair of functions I wrote to solve the problem of creating a box table dynamically, and I think it's clear enough to figure out how to modify for a gallery-type scenario:
