[RESOLVED] Paginate text, in a fixed height website?

Hi,

I am preparing to built a website that requires the text be split into as many pages as is needed to fit into a set website size. There will be no scrolling up or down, e.g. the viewable area of the website is 500px x 300px.

Its a basic custom-built CMS using PHP and MySQL.

How can I detect when my set width / height has been filled.... and so create more pages? Maybe this is not a pure PHP job, perhaps with Javascript as well?

Any ideas would be much appreciated, thanks in advance.

very server intensive:

-> Count the number of paragraphs as-you-go
-> Count the number of characters you have retrieved

Do the math: Number of chars (appr. ) per line before a new line is started, keeping in mind that a new paragraph will start a new line.

It is however a poor web-design concept to have non-flexiable viewable areas, since I may not want to view your page full-screen..

Thanks, its not an good design concept at all, but try telling that to the non-tech designer!

So, realistically without using frames I can't do this in PHP... that's fine by me!

Now to pass that news on...

Surely your non-tech designer would understand that problem 😃

But you can use a <div> element, and use CSS to set its size. You can even specify that it has its own scrollbar if the content happens to run on too long. But that's a design issue; for you it would be no different to putting the content into any other block-level element, like a <p>.

Ah, these guys never understand. They wanted to do the whole thing in Flash, with wizzing, banging logos and other horrible ideas.

But, if I can't do it, it can't be done. Easy.

The CSS idea did occur to me also, any idea how well supported this CSS feature would be by browsers? Esp. IE?
That's a question for a CSS forum!
