I hope I can effectively explain what I'm after and that you'll be able to direct me to the right product.
We are trying to build a site for our very small town -- local news and events, etc. Included in that we would like to be able to have a section where non-profit groups and churches could build their own sites and then maintain them on our server. This would be our "Communities" area.
Nothing spectacular for these small sites, just home page with a photo, about us, a news page, and maybe a couple more. In our experience most non-profits don't have anybody to update their sites and don't want to do much more than that. Further, whatever interface they are given has to be super simple.
I've seen the service offered by Lycos Tripod, and it is very good, and also free. The only drawback is that it is hosted on Tripod's server, and not ours -- therefore we would not be creating a community of sorts that we can brand.
Bulletin Boards also are not the answer, as it wouldn't allow the groups to present the kind of information that I've outlined -- particularly the news and events function.
So, here's the main question. Is there a PHP script or application Web site builder that will allow us to create and host this community of sites, where we can offer groups an easy way to build a simple site?
I'm guessing that we night have a total of 100 such groups that will want one of these small sites.
Am I barking up the wrong tree here?
If you have any advice on where to find a solution for what we want, I'd sure appreciate knowing about it.
