25 and 50% discount coding

First off, I am a newbie so all help is greatly appreciated. I have a simple PHP shopping cart that I have coded and I want to add in a coupon code area. One code for a 25% discount and the other for a 50% discount. Could someone please help me as to how and where I would start to add that in? I need a little quidance, or if someone knows of some existing code snipped that would help also.

Seriously... Reread your post, and keep in mind that we
- do not know your code
- do not know your shopping cart system (Home-written? Bought? Downloaded)
- Do not know your checkout

Please be somewhat more specific. In principle you can add it anywhere you'd like, as long as it is processed at checkout.
