newbie... need to make a function...

hi guys.. great forum here 🙂

i have managed to pull togehter anough resources to get an online mysql - php site up and running

i am running into trouble this way:

i need to pull data from 2 fields in one table, but first go to another table and look to see if data is there...

if so display contents of that filed as 'selected' in form drop down select box

so we have somehting like this

db table widget1 field w1 and w2

db table widget2 filed p1

then we have a form - on this form we have a select box populated with the contents of widget1 fields w1 (value) w2 which holds the name of the value

in this select box - we first go to table widget2 and look in field p1 and show this value as selected if it exists...

i have tried for hours today and strike out...

suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I think this is what you need:

First you do a query/select to get the value for from widget2 to get the value of p1. Then you do a query/select on widget1 to see if any posts containes the value of p1, if yes the num var is greater than 0. You do a 3rd query/select to use to build up your form. In the while the if statement check to see when p1 matches w2, and when it does it puts in the selected="selected".
It worked on my system, but it might not be the best solution since i only started with php a few days ago.
Also a little thanks to the author of this page: http://www.zend.com/manual/function.mysql-query.php so i figured out how to do this "$query=sprintf("SELECT count(*) num FROM widget1 WHERE w2='%s'",mysql_real_escape_string($resu["p1"]));" correctly 🙂
