What is the best way to find the next and previous record given the ID of one somewhere in the middle?

I have a photogallery i am working on and i want users to be able to click next/previous to go through them.

I tried +/- 1 but ofcourse that messes up when a number is missing. (ie. a record is deleted)

Couldnt see anything in the manual for this.
