Image script

I'm at the planning stages of a script that I'll attempt to put together. It'll allow me uploading a large image, while creating a thumbnail, changing the name to some hard to remember string, I suppose.

I don't have any experience with image functions but have heard about a few that come with PHP.

First of all, how do I find what package is installed on my server?
Secondly, any suggestions where to begin? I'm sure there are some nice scripts are already out there.

I'm working on this one at the mo.
It's a bit clunky and I'm trying to make it more flexible but it's taught me quite a bit.
It's entitled 'build a gallery in minutes' - doesn't say how many minutes but it's a lot!
