GIF Compression via PHP or *nix

I have a nix box (Cent OS) and I'm trying to get some php code to compress an animated gif. Anyone have any suggestions as to any nix software or php code that can compress animated gifs via command line?

I'm not sure you can do anything with animated gifs in php.......you certainly can't create them.

On the contrary! 🙂 I already have the code to create them on the fly. It works GREAT... The problem is compressing them down now that they've been created, frame by frame.

Do we have any linux geniuses in the house? Can gimp do this? via command line??
