[RESOLVED] use php to ping a domain?

I've tried using nslookup to verify MX records for user-submitted email addresses, but the timeouts are killing me-- they're way too slow for my taste. I'm now settling for pinging the domain, but it still seems like they're should be a cleaner way to just verify that 'domain.com' exists.

Does anyone have any suggestions for verifying a domain? I've settled on just making system calls, but love to know if someone's been able to do something like this with cURL or another facility.

If you have non-Windows you could use getmxrr() or you could try PEAR Net_DNS.
