Connecting PHP and MySQL

I am trying to connect MySQL 5.0.22 with PHP 5.1.4
I am told that I should use mysqli_connect('local host', 'root', 'password', 'DBname') instead of mysql_connect() as being an improvement. (Is this true?)
Using either, with or without the "i", my system can't locate these files.
PHP is located in c😐php, and this is the file that contains mysqli_connect, php5ts.dll, php_mysql.dll, php_mysqli.dll, libmysql.dll. c:\php is on the Windows system path.

I have added the following two lines to the php.ini file:
extension=php_mysql.dll
extension=php_mysqli.dll
When I run a simple page using $link= mysqli_connect(...) an error message says that mysqli_connect can't be found. Get the same thing using mysql_connect as well.
Finally, I am using Windows XP Medial Center, vers 2002 Service pack 2,
IE 6.0
I have already looked for help in the database session, but it did not prove to be helpful.

Two things did you restart the server (I am assuming you are using IIS) . Two are you sure that you are editing the active php.ini? What shows up when you do a phpinfo()?

Also if you have in fact enabled mysqli as well as mysql you can connect in one query to the server and the database with

mysqli_connect(host,user,pass,database);

Also you do not add those lines to the php.ini file they should be in the extensions section and you would merely uncomment them by removing the ; (semicolon) from the front of them as below.

Thanks for the response!
First, I did restart the server each time I change something. My server is an Apache version 2.0.55
When I do a PHP info a whole list of stuff comes up.
Concerning the php.ini, I have removed the semicolons from php_mysql.dll and at your suggestion I removed them also from the php_mssql.dll also.
Finally I had to add the "extension=php_mysqli.dll " line since it didn't appear in php.ini.
Unfortunately, I am still getting the same error message:
"Fatal Error call to undefined function mysql_connect(...)"

Where are all your extension files located? In the php.ini is where you tell PHP where they are located i.e.

; Directory in which the loadable extensions (modules) reside.
extension_dir = "C:\Program Files\xampp\php\ext\"

Wherever that extension directory is should be in the above directive and the php_mysqli.dllmust be in that directory or PHP can not find it and will produce an error. Normally in the main PHP directory is where it is it can be named ext(PHP4) or extensions(PHP5)at least on my install and the one it is in should have about 68 extensions in it. Check for that info and see what happens.

Hi Houdini,
My extension files are located in c:\php\ext and this is how the directive reads in php.ini
"Extension_Dir=c:\php\ext "
(Note: c:\php is the php5 directory and it contains php.ini )
I have about 47 extensions in the directory.
(Could the problem be something dumb like using a final backslash on the ext subdirectory:
to wit: c:\php\ext\ (I'll try it anyway)

there should be no trailing \ backslash it merely needs to know where the directory is and if php_mysqli.dll is there then it should run. What about MySQL does it work and does it show up in phpinfo()?

In answer to your questions: MySQL runs with no problem.
There does not appear to be any reference at all in phpinfo() to MySQL.
(On the first screen there is a line that says "PHP Extension 20050922, but I doubt if that is significant.)_ Should there be a MySQL section in phpinfo() ?

Yes there should here is a link to what is on my system (I have mssql mysql and mysqli at this image . Be sure that you are editing the active php.ini, if you make a change to php.ini and then restart Apache and then do not see the change then apparently you are not editing the correct php.ini, if this is the case then do a hard drive search for php.ini and see if there are not more than one and edit them all one at a time then restart the server taking note of when your configuration changes. My active php.ini using PHP5 is in the apache/bin/ folder it is possible that your is also.

I checked the .ini file and indeed is the active one since I can change it. Also present were two files php.ini-dist and php.ini-recommended . But these have a different name and should not be ionvolved.
I looked through the php.ini file and found lot's of SQL stuff. I copied below the part that has to do with mysqli. Hope it gives some clue.

Then all you should have left is to make sure that the php_mysqli.dll is actually in your ext directory. Keeping in mind that using it is just a little different with connect because you connect to the server as well as select the database all in one operation, so instead of

$connect= mysql_connect($host,$user,$password)
  or die("Coudlnot conect to the server".mysql_error());
$select=mysql_select_db($database,$connect)
  or die("Could not select $database. MySQL said: ".mysql_error());

you just do

$connect=mysqli_connect($host,$user,$password,$database)
  or die("There was a problem with connecting to the database. MySQL said: ".mysql_error());

I am still getting the same error when I use the following code:

This is very similar to your code. (Probably OK ?)
As before the error is "Call to undefined functrion mysqli_connect(..)
We still have the mystery of your system showing mysql stuff in phpinfo() and mine shows nothing there even though there are mysql sections in php.ini ???

Try downloading fresh extensions from php.net and replace the php_mysqli.dll, it is possible that you have a corrupted file. This is all I could think of with the exception of just downloading XAMPP, I believe that with PHP5 it comes with mysql disabled but not mysqli enabled, so something here is not really right.
