soI'm using gd to make thumbnails for my photo gallery instead of the script rendering them everytime it is called and what I have noticed is that it creates crappy resolution thumbnails. So what I was wonder is can gd make better resolution thumbnails or is there some other lib out there that can.

Depends on how you're creating the thumbnails. Though I have noticed that there is a bit of a quality drop off with GD. Still, you can make improvements based on function choice.

Otherwise, you'll have to look at other image programs that are installed on your server available to you, such as ImageMagick and whatnot.
