[RESOLVED] Check if email adress is a real email adress?

Hey,

I tried to find this out but didnt really come up with everything that works, so here my question:

How do I check an email adress if it is a real email adress containing and @ and a . ? I guess there is a PHP function searching the Variable for these signs but not sure bout anything.

So please help me, apreciating a lot

There are three basic ways:

1. Check the email address for syntactical validity - usually with a regular expression (There are loads of examples, pick one, or make your own)
2. Also check the domain name for validity (i.e. exists and has at least one A or MX record)
3. Require the user to enter some code that they will receive by email (e.g. a password)

There is no way of categorically ensuring an email address's validity.

Method 3 has the advantage that it also ensures that the user has access to the mailbox.

Just because an email address is valid doesn't mean it belongs to the person who is registering.
