query question

I am using the following query to count how many contractors have call backs set. This query is getting me only part way there. It gives me how many call backs are set total for all the contractors that it matches. how can i get it so it just tells me how many contractors have call backs? Here is the query i'm using:

$callbacksQ = "SELECT c.CompanyID, b.CompanyID, b.alertid FROM Contractors c, callbacks b WHERE ($statesQueryString) AND Contract != 'DNC' AND c.CompanyID = b.CompanyID";
$callbacksR = mysql_query($callbacksQ);
$callbackNum = mysql_num_rows($callbacksR);

I'm sure its an easy fix, i'm just blind to the solution.

This is a bit confusing, let me rephase that, see if it's what you mean
"There are some ITEM A(what ever it is)
I used those code to get how many ITEM A there are,
I just want to know how many ITEM A have PROPERITY B"
if it is what you mean, you can:

$i = 0;
while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($callbacksR)) { // this assiangn a row of query to $row
 if ($row['whateverthefieldnameis'] = 'whateveryouneed') {
   $i++;
}
}
echo 'there are '.$i.' ITEM A have PROPERITY B';

My crystal ball is a little cloudy when it comes to seeing your table structure and your selection criteria inside $statesQueryString. I can see you are joining 2 tables but that's all I can see.

You're blind to solution - think how blind we are when we don't even know the data you are dealing with.

Mgccl, I am already finding that data without your code. what i need is to narrow it down. let me try and re-explain. There are two tables i am querying. one has callback data, one has contractor data, the common link between the two is the CompanyID, which is unique in the contractor table. The solution i seek is to count all the contractors that have callbacks set for them. the query i provided is currently counting all of the callbacks for any contractor that matches the search criteria. does this help?

barand, you don't need a crystal ball, and for all i care, you can smash it on the floor. i understand that my original question was hazy, but simply replying with a "i can help but i need this info" instead of, "insert smart ass response here" would be much appreciated.
