$value can be only from letters, digits, dots and underscores.
How to check it?
OK that covers almost all printable characters, so what are you wanting to do or not do with them. Do you have some example strings perhaps?
It's for username validation.
Hm... Then could say list all unprintable characters or write how to check if they exist?
