Newbie PHP and SQL

Just downloaded MySQL from mysql.com and installed on my home computer.
I have Apache which is great and enables me to run PHP.
Wamp has it's own folder and a sub folder labelled MySQL
I have installed MySQL in a seperate folder within Programs folder.
Nothing seems to work and any script I write and run gives the message..
"Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO) in c:\wamp\www\Mesh4Us\Htdocs\Captain2\Trial\MySQL2.php on line 26
Can't connect to database"

Unfortunately, the Tutorial I've read today doesn't seem to cover the very basics.

Please point an old crusty (very old :-) in the right direction someone.
Don't want to use the MySQL feature on my web site before I find out a bit about the beast.

OK WAMP already has Mysql and it may or may not have phpMyAdmin included, I used to use WAMP but went back to XAMPP. Go to your control panel and see if you don'st have a link to phpMyAdmin there if so click it and play aroud with it. Create a datebase then create some tables for the database and populate those tables with fake data, delete data add data update data all that. You don need to have two running, and if I remember right it won't work cause WAMP stands for Windows Apache MySQL PHP. XAMPP stands for eXtra Apache MySQL PHP Perl (or something like that) and MAMP stands for Mac Apache MySQL PHP and if that is not enough then LAMP is of course for Linux Apache MySQL PHP

If your host is linux/unix and your home pc is Windows, beware that some differences arise that makes programming problematic when swapping code back and forth. I would recommending splurging on a 2 or 3 dollar a month host that includes php/mysql just to have a test box out on the net, even if you do most of your testing at home.

This probably means your trying to login without a password.

Host is Windows... I'm Windows XP Home.
Tried loading MySQL from MySQL.com. Installation worked but produced conflict problems with WAMP. After a full 24hrs I got back to where I was and re-installed WAMP.
The folder structure is MySQL is different from the MySQL folder in WAMP so I installed MySQL in a different folder. That was probably a mistake but the documentation is vague to non-existant!
The MySQL within wamp is such that I cant configure the 'instance' because there's a file missing. Neither does it have an Administrator but I don't know if I need one. Perhaps give UP is the solution.

You might try a prepackaged deal like http://www.wampserver.com/en/ that will install everything for you automatically. There are several packages similar to this. Another one is http://sourceforge.net/projects/phptriad
