Feedback Form

Hello everyone.
I have only recently started to learn PHP and i enjoy every minute of it until i tried to build a feedback form and php script to receive the data. I have checked and rechecked the code and they are both stored in the same php enabled folder but whenever i open up the form "feedback.html" to input data and then click on the submit button i am immediately confronted by a "File Download" box with options to open, save, or cancel? I always make sure that my copy of XAMPP is open and running. I even practice formatting with html tags some simple scripts so the program is definately functioning. Would really appreciate any and all help and advice to overcome this problem. Many thanks. bombayduck

Are you puttin the files in the htdocs folder? Also are you trying to view your files by opening your browser and typing http://localhost/nameofyourfile.php or html or whatever you named it?

Keep in mind that PHP must run on a server unlike HTML which will open by double or clicking on the file name will work PHP must be on a server.

I save both "feedback.html" and "handle_form.php" in the same php enabled folder. The path would read as follows. http://localhost/phpfolder.php/filename.php. When i want to test the "feedback.html" file by inputting data i do navigate to the folder where it is stored.
I really do enjoy learning php and would be gutted if i had to stop over a problem like this. Thanks for replying. bombayduck.

It should be http://localhost/phpfolder/filename.php not http://localhost/phpfolder.php/filename.php
anyway them write this and put it into the htdocs folder and test it

<?php
echo "This actually works and is in the proper folder";
?>

Now save that as test.php then type into the browser address bar http://localhost/test.php and see if it does not work by merely stating This actually works and is in the proper folder

I created, named, and finally saved the file into the htdocs folder as you suggested and it worked a treat! Which means i was doing it wrong all the time.

My friend installed XAMPP onto my computer for me. But i have just found out that he didn't configure php ini or apache to have the mail server set to be my isp's mail server. Could this be the problem? If so could you please advise me how to remedy the problem please. Many thanks. bombayduck

Yes I can! Merely go to your php.ini which with XAMPP is in apache/bin just under the xampp/htdocs folder and fix this line of code to send mail with mail().

[mail function]
; For Win32 only.
SMTP = mail.bna.bellsouth.net//put your isp stuff here (this is mine)
smtp_port = 25

; For Win32 only.
sendmail_from = //put your ISP assigned email here

Sorry to be such a nuisance Houdini but i just want to make sure i've got everything right.
I found php ini by running phpinfo(). I then copied and pasted the php ini path into seach and came up with Apache/bin. I found [mail function] and just want to make sure that i don't make a mistake. So could you please tell me if this is right.
[mail function]
; For Win32 only.
SMTP = smtp.tiscali.co.uk (my isp's out going mail)
smtp_port = 25

;For Win32 only.
;sendmail_from = my email address

Have now got the feedback form working perfectly thanks to you Houdini.
