adding a line to htaccess from php

I've been trying to come up with a way to add a redirect line automatically to the htaccess file from php.

My goal is to have users pick their domain name (i.e. mysite.com/username) and have the htaccess redirect the domain name (mysite.com/username) to http://www.mysite.com/user.php?ID=12345

Any ideas?

I think that you can't edit this document, because htaccess is file wich protected by Apache, and user can't edit it by external programs, because external programs can't seem it because it hidden by server when it run.

There is a htaccess.class.php but I can't get it to work.

.htaccess is a regular, normal text file and can be altered and apended with fopen and fwrite just like any other text file.

The truth is, however, that you shoudn't be letting your users do things that will affect such important files. You can accomplish your goal, here, without altering the .htaccess file. You should store the domain names in a database and do the redirects with PHP, not with .htaccess.

I second that, etully.

You CAN edit .htaccess with PHP, but it is not a very good idea.

Instead, consider using a simple mechanism to do it in PHP. Some people find they can use mod_rewrite for this or some other Apache-based mechanism that doesn't involve modifying .htaccess at runtime.
