Video Screenshots ... ??

Hi,

I dont know whether this is actually to do with PHP or not...

But ... When a user uploads a video on my website, I want it to make a screen shot of the first frame.

So I can then display random video screenshots on the homepage linking to the video clip.

Can anyone advise me on what this might be called or how to do it?

I don't think PHP can do that but you could use a video editor to save selected frames as a jpeg or gif or even png if you have the right software. GD only works with jpeg gif png wbmp or xbm formats at least my version 2.0.28

I use FFMPEG for that and you can call it from PHP (system call). In this way, you can have someone upload a video and you can automatically capture a screenshot of the first frame (or one frame per second if you wanted). You can extract that out as a jpg and save it to your directory so that the video will have a thumbnail graphic. This way, you don't have to manually load every video in a video editor - the server does the work for you.

Be warned, however, FFMPEG took me a few days to figure out. It's great for what it does... but it's not for newbies.
