Have only just started to learn PHP but as i have always used Notpad i was wondering if someone could tell me if there's a better "free" alternative i could start using and perhaps help to speed up the learning process. Thanks all. bombayduck

First thing's first - ditch notepad and get Notepad2.

I've replaced notepad on my computer and also use it for some PHP editing. The rest I do in Dreamweaver simply because I have a site setup in their to upload the files when saved and whatnot.

Next, search the board for keywords such as php editor and whatnot - this topic has been covered too many times to count.

PHP Designer and a google search will come up with PHP Designer2006 as the first (which I use) Very good and FREE. Plus it is small and will definately speed up your coding.

I've tried a lot (including PHPDesigner2006, WeBuilder 2006 / Rapid PHP, Zend IDE, Dreamweaver, Notepad, Notepad2, Notepad++, and others) to really see what I like best. Ultimately, I ended up stopping on a $20 program called EditPlus. It handles all file formats, and the user base is large enough to allow for syntax highlighting for almost any file / language.

EditPlus is what I use on a daily basis to code my pages. Easy to configure, small, and light. But that's just my suggestion.

Also, might I suggest you peruse this thread 🙂 You may find more editors than you can shake a stick at there!!
