[RESOLVED] php 5 + mysql 5

I have built several databases and webpages based upon php 4.3.x and mysql 4.x, but I'm struggling with php5 and mysql 5. There are several websites with tutorials for php5 and mysql 5 using the mysqli commands, but there are just as many showing the use of the old mysql commands. Are they both really still available? Which is better or is that just personal preference? Thanks for any answers your able to give.

Interesting! I already have most my pages created for my new website from my old scripts and since most my scripts will still work with php5, I'm not sure why I want to rewrite them. I hate being in that boat, but it comes down to time now.

Are your original scripts written in OOP?

Unfortunately no, that is what my biggest concern is at the moment. I have thought about doing more with php5 even from time I posted my last message. I'm still messing around, mainly burning time, and trying to convenience myself php5 is the best. The more I wonder about things, the more I don't want to be left behind when it comes time to move on. I know now that I'm starting to get a learning curve that I will have to huddle, I don't want it to be to steep when php6 comes along. The best part is this is for internal projects on my own server.

Yes, the old mysql_ functions are still available and behave much as they ever did, despite the (potential) availability of mysqli and PDO_Mysql

However, some of the more advanced functions of MySQL, particularly 4.1+, are not accessible from the mysql_ functions. The main one is parameterised queries.

But a lot you can still do, e.g. calling stored procedures, selecting from views, even though those features weren't available before.

If I was you, in my opinion I wouldn’t worry so much about MySQLi.

I’d initially focus on writing your scripts using object orientation. I think this would be the biggest step for you and if you’ve written your code particularly well implementing MySQLi at a later stage shouldn’t be a huge issue.

Is there any particular MySQLi function that you need access to?
