[RESOLVED] textarea lost on validation

I am fairly new to this so forgive me if the answer is obvious (and I have been searching the forum).
I have written a PHP form script that validates itself by posting back to itself.
I use VALUE=$var for all the input fields so I don't lose the inputted values.
Except the textarea does not seem to support VALUE= and its input is lost if the form input has errors and the form reshows itself.
What do I need to do to preserve the value of the textbox?

That is because the value of a text area goes between the <textarea name= something> and </testarea> tags so to show that you would have to
echo like so

<textarea name='text'><?php echo $_POST['text']?></textarea>

thanks, that got me going in thr right direction - this was all in the middle of a heredoc so it was not quite that simple, but nearly
I have several php and html books and none of them really gave me a clue about this - are there any you recommend?

As for your question on PHP books or resources, i find the "Extended HTML Help" of the Official PHP Manual to be a great resource.
