Hi,

I own a company and was being charged a fortune to edit my website by the web authors so i decided to make the changes myself.

I decided to install a phpo forum onto the site using phpbb.

Ive managed to upload everything and gone to the install page where it is asking for these details

Database Server Hostname / DSN:

Your Database Name:

Database Username:

Database Password:

Prefix for tables in database:

so i presume its asking for a database. can you download one anywhere and install it and what details would i put in the above etc.

any help would be muchly appreciated.

You need a database engine like MySQL to create and use a database. Now if you control your server then you can download and install mysql. If your website is being hosted by an ISP then you need to ask them about it.

i have access to the ftp. could i host the database on my comp as i have now download mysql5 and do it that way.

You could but it will be very slow.

Look, you seem to be talking about 2 things here:

Managing and editing your site content
Running a forum/bbs on your site

Now, which exactly are you trying to do?

i was a little confused at the question. I have access to where they have stored all my web pages etc and i just presumed this would be the server.

would the easiest way to do this is to get them to build me a database and they host it for me?

No, since they are so expensive on maintenance I would move the site to an independent hosting company. Download all the pages and save them so that you can upload them to another server. Then find a good host and get webspace with a database server included. Someone like Fasthosts here in the UK are a safe bet. If you dont want to move then ask your current host for a db.

Once you have the db login details which the ISP will supply, then just answer the questions that phpbb is asking for and the install will create the database tables etc for you.
