Regular Expression Problem

I want an expression that will match the domain and extension of an URL, EG:

Matches: google.com

I've tried this:

'/^[[:alnum:]][^.]+\.[^.]+$/'

But it doesn't work, however it does work without the [[:alnum:]] Anyone know why?
