I'm, of course, talking about the register_globals, magic_quotes and safe_mode functions. These three functions are hell for every PHP programmer so I'm sure everyone will be happy to hear that these functions will disappear in PHP 6.

In other related cleanup news, register_long_arrays and the long versions of the super globals like $HTTP_COOKIE_VARS are also gone in PHP 6. Same goes for zend.ze1_compatibility_mode which dealt with the backwards compatibility of PHP 5 classes.

It is possible to download daily 'Snapshots' development versions, PHP 6.0-dev
So I downloaded a zip binary for my Windows XP.
I installed it, set the main paths in php.ini-dist and started my server.
No problems running my webscripts and I could not notice any difference,
but this is not to expect either.

The only thing not working was when I tried to enable,
load and use module eaccelerator.dll with php6.
Looks like eAccelerator is dependent on a php5xxx.dll and which of course cant be found in PHP 6.

Otherwise the current php6 distribution looks very much like those latest php5.
At a quick look and test of it.

just a notice:

I havent still found any drawbacks
by running this PHP 6.0-dev

I've tried it at my personal web server for almost 2 weeks now.
Works just as well as PHP 5.1.4 did before.
So looks good for the future version of PHP Language.

I think that's a little too optimistic.... PHP6 only a few months after PHP5 starts to gain ground and replace PHP4? Too optimistic if you ask me 😉

I was listening to the PHP5 CE webcast today and the lady doing it seemed to think that PHP6 was not far off either. She didn't give any kind of timetamble but she did imply it would be out in the next few months.
