mail function does not work...

i've succesfully installed apache+php but now i want to make a script to mail to an mail addres in a variable i use this:

$mail=$_POST['mail'];
mail($mail,"test","test");

and $_POST['mail'] is [e-mail]. but i still havn't reciefed a single mail from my website and this is the same when i don't use variables but type my e-mail as a string in the code

what's wrong?

What OS you have? Do you have your own SMTP server?

If you havent installed SMTP server, no matter what OS you have and you have to use your ISP's SMTP server(check php.ini)

i use dsl (linux) and i've installed xampp for linux, the server signature says:

Apache/2.0.55 (Unix) mod_ssl/2.0.55 OpenSSL/0.9.8a PHP/5.0.5 DAV/2 mod_perl/2.0.1 Perl/v5.8.7 Server at 83.117.102.76 Port 80

(can maybe provide some info)

Try this:

var_dump(mail($mail,"test","test")); 

What do you see now? The mail() function returns TRUE if the mail was send succesfully. Of course, due to the lack of proper mail headers, it's also possible that the mail you sent is filtered as spam by Gmail.
