Look, here's the deal. (wow, a ? I can answer!!! yippee)
I have Apache on my computer, but I don't know where to host the images or in which folder to put them.
First off, you need to determine where (what folder) do you want to be your MAIN working directory. Basically, what folder on your computer to you want to "train" in. For example, maybe you already have websites saved in your My Documents folder. Or maybe you have a site on your desktop called "MySite". Just pick a folder and let that folder be the MAIN and ONLY folder you will work in, with regards to making, saving, and editing php files.
When you first install Appache and PHP (and maybe even mysql), the DEFAULT location of this specific folder is normally "C:/Apache2/htdocs". So unless you change anything, and without going into more technical detail, this would be your working directory. So, let's say you decide that you want to work in a folder called PHPtraining, which is located on your desktop.
You then need to open up the Appache configuration file (httpd.conf), and edit accordingly. Find the line that says:
DocumentRoot "C:/Apache2/htdocs"
...and change to whatever you like, in the case of our example, to:
DocumentRoot "C:/Documents and Settings/loginname/Desktop/PHPtraining"
And then a few lines later, in that same configuration file, you need to AGAIN change the following line:
<Directory "C:/Apache2/htdocs">
....to whatever you like, again, in our example, you change to:
<Directory "C:/Documents and Settings/loginname/Desktop/PHPtraining">
So now you can save php files to the PHPtraining folder located on your desktop, and when viewed in internet explorer, they will work fine. Do however, make sure that you edit your file extensions to make sure that php files open in whatever browser you choose.
Then open up notepad/wordpad or any editor you like and type the following:
<?php
phpinfo();
?>
Save that as phptest.php or again, whatever name you choose, and save it to the PHPtraining folder.
Now, if you go to your browser and type http://localhost/phptest.php , you should see a nice page of the php information for your computer. PHP is working and you now have a directory to work in. And further, you can also work in ANY directory that is located within that training directory. So if you had saved that phptest.php to /Desktop/PHPtraining/phase1/phptest.php , you could have run it in your browser by typing:
http://localhost/phase1/phptest.php
Hope this helps. Enjoy.
