uploading files ... status bar?

Hi There,

We are designers working on a simple website for a local Print Shop. They want a way for clients to upload files to their FTP site, right from the website.

The PHP Programmer we have hired has got it working, but he says there's no way to display a "status bar" showing that the file is actually uploading.

Is this true?

Without a status bar, the user sees nothing, and doesn't know his file is uploading, so he thinks there is an error, and clicks away.

He could create a simple image status bar. have a separate image for each % done and just load the new image as the file progressess. The image files should not be too large because they are not too complicated, so bandwidth should not be a issue.

If you don't find any status bar script (I'm not sure how you would make one), do something like this

So when the user clicks submit, a message will show up that reads "Loading... Please wait."

I have tried out php/perl upload progress bars, but found them to slow down the upload significantly. An alternative is to build/buy a Java Applet that does the FTP uploading. Then you can have a very nice looking progress bar.

to be honest, this question has been asked many times, and there is no perfect solution...

java applet is good but then again, your depending on using java... to be honest the perfect solution is the javascript one above... a lot of sites use that as a solution...

Whats better is, instead of saying "please wait" - use an imagine that is animated... it makes the person on the other end at least think that it is busy uploading instead of thinking it has just crashed. 🙂

This is text version.........I've used it with varying success, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

It seems to be more stable on non-shared hosts.
