A simple way to look at time?

Hi,

I am trying to build a simple 'Song Currently Playing' script for a radio station. In a database I have 3 columns...

airtime | Title | Artist

0211 Get Back Beatles
0216 Mothers Little Helper rolling stones
0231 faith George Michael

So in the table above.... Get Back plays at 2:11 am and the next song Mothers little helper plays at 2:16am.

Can anyone think of an easy script that can look at the server time and display the correct title and song that should be currently playing in that time? I cannot change the time output structure....as this is how the radio automation system displays the playtime.

I don't know how your radio station works, but if the script reloads for each song, something like this (untested) should work:

$query = "SELECT * FROM my_table " .
         "WHERE CONCAT(time, '00') >= CURTIME() ORDER BY time";
$result = mysql_query($query);
$row = mysql_fetch_assoc($result);
echo $row['title'] . ' : ' . $row['artist'];

The script will not reload. It will be placed on the website and read the data that is stored in a table. The radio station computer and the webserver are seperate machines.

Then you'll probably need to do it client-side.

Assume $time is the value returned from the database:

$time = "0211";
echo date("h:ia", mktime(substr($time, 0, 2), substr($time, 2, 2)));

I think I hadn't finished my first cup of coffee when I wrote that. For some reason I thought you were looking for a way to convert the time value from the DB to a more human-readable one. :rolleyes:

How about:

$now = date("Hi"); // hhmm
$query = "SELECT `Title`, `Artist`, `airtime`  FROM `table_name` " .
         "WHERE `airtime` <= $now ORDER BY `airtime` DESC LIMIT 1";

You'll probably need to add something to the WHERE clause to limit the results to those for today. If it's a DATE type field, just add "AND CURDATE() = date_column".
