formatting a string???

Hi, i am looking at formatting a string as follows..

say for example i have a phone number, remembering some phone numbers are of different formats i want the user to be able to type there number as one solid string like this:

01734929394

but then by providing a format

you get

01734 929394 or;

###

you get

017 349 29394

etc..

thank in advance, if anyone can provide a small example of this i would be very greatfull.
