Listing page numbers

Hi

How do you get php to show the amount of pages for you to see, for example, in this forum there maybe 5 pages of messages, how do you get php to post that and how do you configure the link to the different pages. Apologies if this has been asked before. I am using DreamWeaver and I am on a hosting package.
