chmod operation

I have got Apache working in linux platform.I am getting the appropriate page on localhost.But I cannot save a file to /var/www/html because I am told: Could not save the file "/var/www/html/first.php".

I tried setting chmod to 775 to get permission for writing.
chmod 775 www.
But the error I get is: 'chmod: failed to get attributes of 'www':No such file or directory'.Plz help.

Not working. Where should the command be given from?
The root or from the directory /var/www/html?

Try chmod -R 775 /var/www
