a question....

Hi everyone, just a quick question to ask. I'm doing a php/mysql website with custom news, login and forum scripts. The news and login script have been finished and they use MySQL DB and work nicely thankyou very much 😃.

The question is, because I'm doing the site for my mountaineering club, and its been hosted by the university, they only run an IIS 6 Server with MS SQL.
I've requested a DB and they said it only had MS SQL.
I was wondering if the php mysql functions were the same as mssql functions, so basically would i be able to just edit "mysqlfunction" to "mssqlfunction".
And would I have to edit any queries?

All SQL is not created equal, but it should be an easy conversion, and yes, you most likely will have to edit your queries.

A suggestion is to do a class to handle all database communication, then when you change database you only need to change in that file and test if your sql-queries still work. Something like:

function query($sQuery)
{
	if( !$result = @mysql_query($sQuery, $this->dbh))
		die(mysql_error());

return $result;
}

function executeUpdate($sQuery){
	$this->query($sQuery);
}

Good idea Piranha.

But because of the various SQL implementation differences, just putting a wrapper around the queries will not help if comparable functions do not exist between the implementations (e.g. transactions etc.).

True. But when people don't use database specific functions it would work without problem. For example it would work for all select-statements between MS SQL and My SQL since transactions are normally not used. And most updates and would work as well since it does not need transactions.

Of course, if you use transactions and other database specific functions you have to rewrite the queries. And it might be the case that some queries won't work, but normally most queries will work without any problem.

Yeh, making a class seems like a good idea, but I have no idea on how classes work, are there any good tutorials out there?
I know a script called ezSQL, but i prefer to make my own.
