New server. Old URLs quit working

I recently moved over to a new server, and some of my urls quit working. A URL like:

http://www.domain.com/someprogram/somevariable

...now returns 404. In these cases, the PHP is really someprogram.php and "somevariable" is treated as an argument, equivalent to maybe:

http://www.domain.com/someprogram.php?somevariable

My last box, I didn't have to do any sort of apache magic to get this working, and we've been using it for months and months. What's worse, I don't really even know what this trick is called, so it's hard to google an answer.

Anybody got any ideas?

are you sure? that looks exactly like what one would do with mod_rewrite

I know. Maybe it is mod_rewrite, but the last few severs I've used, this just "worked', without my having to do anything with mod_rewrite.

Also, the new box runs Apache 2, vs 1.3...

Yeah, I just wrote some mod_rewrite stuff. I never had to do that before. Oh well, on to the next problem.
